Mahindra United inflicted a 5-0 hammering on Federation Cup finalists Lajong FC with Muritala Ali and Paresh Shivalkar scoring a brace each and Mohammad Rafi chipping in with a goal.
The thumping victory catapulted the hosts to the top of the league table with 20 points from 10 games. However, Chirag United or Dempo could upstage Mahindras if Monday's encounter between the two produces a result.
But, till then, Mahindras can bask in the glory of a clinical performance that would make all their rivals stand up and take notice. David Booth's men had come under a lot of criticism despite beating Sporting Club de Goa in their last league encounter. The Englishman made four changes in the squad. Steven Dias and Shivalkar provided the perfect tempo.
Mahindras' domination in the first half was absolute and Lajong had to wait for 42 minutes to come up with their first effective move. Between the 32nd and 35th minute, Lajong custodian, Gumpe Rime, was forced to make five saves before Rafi once against breached his defence.
