Man United stung by 'Mosquito'

sports Updated: Sep 28, 2007 20:53 IST

Manchester United crashed out of the League Cup as Coventry’s Maltese striker Michael Mifsud scored twice in his side’s shock 2-0 victory at Old Trafford.

Alex Ferguson rested all 11 of the players who started against Chelsea on Sunday and his lack of interest in the third round tie was reflected in a sloppy display.

The 26-year-old is nicknamed the ‘Mosquito’ and he was a pest for United all night as Ferguson’s side lost to lower league opposition at home for the first time in 12 years.

Memories of that defeat against York came flooding back as Coventry, who arrived at Old Trafford without a win in three games and sitting eighth in the Championship, took the game to United.

Villarreal lead La Liga

MADRID: Villarreal took the lead in La Liga after they won 2-0 at Racing Santander. First half goals from Turkish international Nihat Kahveci and their American-born Italian striker Guiseppe Rossi secured pole position on goal difference from local rivals Valencia, who laboured to a 2-1 win over Getafe.

The two teams both have 12 points from their five games, with unbeaten Barcelona one point further back after inflicting a 4-1 thrashing on Real Zaragoza.

Inter join Roma at the top

ROME: Defending champions Inter Milan moved level on points with Serie A leaders AS Roma after a 3-0 home win over Sampdoria.

With Roma being held to a 2-2 draw at Fiorentina on Wednesday it left them and Inter on 11 points, with Roma retaining the lead on goal difference. Juventus beat Reggina 4-0 and are one point behind the leaders.
