Manchester City completes signing of Benjani from Pompey despite closure of transfer window

The clubs were unsure whether transfer and registration documents had been filed in time for the deal to be approved, with reports in British papers that Manchester City had changed its mind on the player.

Manchester City completed the signing of Zimbabwe striker Benjani Mwaruwari from Portsmouth on Tuesday, five days after the January transfer window closed. City paid 3.87 million pounds (US$7.6 million; euro5.2 million) for the 29-year-old Benjani, who has scored 12 goals for Pompey this season, after the Premier League and Football Association ruled that the move could go ahead.

The clubs were unsure whether transfer and registration documents had been filed in time for the deal to be approved, with reports in British papers that Manchester City had changed its mind on the player.

But City said Benjani had signed a 2{-year contract after passing a medical and agreeing to a contract, and added that it would pay Portsmouth more money if the player starts a certain number of matches up to a maximum of 75.

"I would like to thank Portsmouth Football Club, the Premier League and the Football Association for their help, understanding and assistance in enabling this transfer to be completed," City chief executive Alistair Mackintosh said.
