Metalist lose Court of Arbitration challenge

Ukraine’s Metalist Kharkiv have failed in their second attempt to win a stay of a Champions League ban imposed for match-fixing, the Court of Arbitration for Sport said on Monday.

In a statement, the CAS said that it had rejected Metalist’s request for “urgent provisional measures” to block the ban, which the Ukrainian club had filed the previous day.

“Accordingly, the UEFA decision remains in force,” the Swiss-based tribunal said. The legal wrangling has been going back and forth for more than a week. Tuesday’s decision by the CAS — the supreme court of the sports world — comes in the wake of a similar ruling that it issued last Friday. Metalist, who had filed their first emergency request to the CAS last Thursday, went on to submit a new one on grounds that they had fresh evidence.
