Pune FC dealt a hammer blow to defending champions Dempo’s ambitions hitting late goals to carve out a stunning 5-1 victory in an 11th round I-League match at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda near here on Saturday.

South Sudan international James Moga scored a brace and assisted two more. Goals from Izumi Arata, Jeje Lalpekhlua and Douhou Pierre stunned Dempo for whom Joaquim Abranches’ stunning free-kick was the sole bright spot.

Pune FC now have 20 points from 10 games while Dempo stay on 25 from 11.

Pune FC went ahead when Moga showed great skill and strength to meet a through ball from Othallo Tabia and then slam it between the legs of Dempo goalkeeper Subhashish Roy Chowdhury. Then, Moga’s header from close sailed over the crossbar. Joaquim Abranches brought Dempo back in the game in the 19th minute when his free-kick from almost 30 yards out zoomed into the goal, leaving everyone, including Pune FC goalkeeper Abhra Mondal, stunned.

The second session saw the visitors turn the tables on their rivals with an attacking display that left Dempo shattered.
