Reunited as a pair after nine years, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi will face the Swiss-Canadian duo of Stanislas Wawrinka and Frank Dancevic in the first round of the doubles event in the Aircel ATP Chennai Open beginning on Monday.
Paes and Bhupathi, the top seeds here, will use the Chennai Open to prepare for the season's first Grand Slam, the Australian Open, which starts on January 17.
Paes (37) and Bhupathi (36) provided the home crowd huge excitement in the Chennai Open during 1997-99 when they won the doubles title for three consecutive years. They also won the doubles crown at the same venue in 2002.
The two formed a formidable partnership in the late 90s and steadily climbed the ladder in doubles rankings to become a strong force by winning three Grand Slam titles.
Paes has bagged a career 12 Grand Slam titles, while Bhupathi 11.
For some unspecified reasons, the duo took to different ways in 2002.
The doubles draw, which was announced today, also set up a possible second round meeting between the Indo-Pak duo of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq-Qureshi and the Indian pair of Somdev Devvarman and Sanam Singh.
Bopanna and Qureshi, the second seeds and world number 18, will face the Brazilian/Argentinean pair of Marcos Daniel and Eduardo Schwank.
The Somdev-Sanam duo will face the Dutch/American pair of Robin Haase and David Martin.
