MONACO: Australian Daniel Ricciardo set the pace for Red Bull in Monaco Grand Prix practice on Thursday, with crashes and a loose drain cover putting safety back in the spotlight at Formula One’s showcase race.
Ricciardo lapped the twisty harbourside circuit in a quickest time of one minute 14.607 seconds, 0.606 faster than triple champion Lewis Hamilton in the closest Mercedes with championship leader Nico Rosberg third.
Hamilton was fastest in the morning with a lap of 1:15.537 on the new ultrasoft Pirelli tyres making their debut this week.
HONG KONG: Joshna Chinappa defeated Rachael Grinham to secure a place in the semifinals while her India teammate Dipika Pallikal lost in straight games against top seed Joelle King in the PSA HKFC International squash tournament here. Joshna won 15-13, 11-6, 6-11, 9-11, 11-4 and next takes on second seed Annie Au in the semifinals on Saturday.
TOUGH DRAW FOR INDIA
PANAJI: India will be up against UAE, Saudi Arabia and Iran in the group stages of AFC U-16 Championship as the draw for the event, which will act as a dress rehearsal for next year’s FIFA U-17 World Cup, was held amid much fanfare here on Thursday. The tournament begins on September 15 and matches will be held at Fatorda and Bambolim Stadium in Goa. The final is on October 2.

SHAMKIR (AZERBAIJAN): GM P Harikrishna played a fine game to hold world No. 2 Fabiano Caruana of Italy in the first round Shamkir Chess tournament that got underway here. Harikrishna came up with a solid performance with black pieces and did not give many chances to Caruana.
