Roddick fumes after US draw

US tennis star Andy Roddick said on Saturday he was seething about a disallowed winner in the USA's WC football match with Slovenia.

Roddick was fuming about Maurice Edu's disallowed headed goal in the dying seconds that would have won it for the USA in their 2-2 draw on Friday.

“I understand the rules of football so well that apparently when two Slovenian guys mug an American guy the American guy gets called for a foul. That's how well I understand the rules,” Roddick said.

Scottish retreat

A chain store in Scotland has had to withdraw “Anyone But England” WC posters from its window displays following complaints they were racist.

HMV, which sells music and videos, took the decision after Fife police visited a store in the Kirkcaldy constituency. The Campaign for an English Parliament (CEP) contacted police about the “insensitive and provocative” items which, their website said on Saturday, were “criminally irresponsible”.

Algerian hope

Arabs were flying the Algerian flag on Saturday after they held England to a draw, keeping the only North African team's hopes alive of qualifying for the next round. Algeria will now face the US on Wednesday, a game Arabs would be watching keenly, not just because of the football, but because they will be wishing for an Arab victory against the super power.
