Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza on Monday crashed out of the women's singles event at the Olympics after retiring midway through her opening round match against Czech Iveta Benesova in Beijing.

Sania trailed 1-6 1-2 against Benesova before making a tearful exit after her right wrist injury forced her to concede the match.

Sania had been struggling with a chronic soreness in her wrist wrist for almost two years and had undergone a surgery in the US earlier this year.

The 21-year-old, however, remains in contention in doubles where she has teamed up with US-based Indian Sunitha Rao.
