Strycova ousted at Memphis

sports Updated: Feb 15, 2011 02:28 IST

Czech top seed Barbora Zahlavova Strycova was bounced from a 1.32 million-dollar WTA and ATP tournament, losing her first-round match to Dutchwoman Michaella Krajicek 6-1, 6-3, on Monday.

On the second day of play for women in a 32-player event staged alongside a men's event, Krajicek took only 70 minutes to advance into a second-round meeting with US qualifier Alexa Glatch.

Strycova's ouster leaves only Czech seventh seed Renta Voracova as the only seeded player in her half of the draw to reach the second round following Sunday's ouster of US No. 8 Vania King and Russian No. 4 Alla Kudryavtseva.

Also ousted Monday was fifth seed Olga Govortsova of Belarus, who fell 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to French qualifier Stephanie Foretz Gacon.

The last of Gacon's seven double faults handed Govortsova a break to pull even at 4-4 in the final set but the lone French player in the women's draw broke back and held to advance after two hours and 22 minutes.

British qualifier Heather Watson will face Gacon in the second round.

Sweden's second-seeded Sofia Arvidsson was set to begin play later Monday against US lucky loser Alexandra Stevenson with the winner to meet another American, Coco Vandeweghe.

Russia's Evgeniya Rodina rallied to defeat Croatian wild card Ajla Tomljanovic 1-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7/5). A double fault by Tomljanovic set up two match points for Rodina, who took advantage of the second to win in one hour 56 minutes.

Rodina to put herself into the path of US third seed Melanie Oudin, who was set to open later Monday against Russian Anastasia Pivovarova.

Men's play was also set to begin later Monday with South African eighth seed Kevin Anderson facing American Robert Kendrick.
