John Terry paid hundreds of thousands of pounds to his former mistress to guarantee her silence in his bid to remain England’s football captain, The Times, London, reported.
Insiders say Terry, 29, was confident of keeping his captain’s armband after agreeing to pay Vanessa Perroncel, 33, the French underwear model, to stop her speaking out.
The exact sum is disputed: friends of Perroncel say it was £750,000 while friends of Terry claim the sum was £400,000.
The settlement led Perroncel to attend a press conference on Friday in which Max Clifford, her publicist, declared that, despite six-figure offers, she would not be selling her story to a Sunday newspaper.
But the deal proved too little, too late, for Terry in his efforts to retain the England captaincy.
An hour before Perroncel’s press conference, the Chelsea footballer was stripped of his captaincy on Friday during a 12-minute meeting with Fabio Capello, the England manager.
