Serb Janko Tipsarevic captured the fist title of his career as he came from a slow start to beat Marcos Baghdatis 6-4, 7-5 for victory at the Malaysian Open on Sunday.

Tipsarevic, seeded third, had been the only player in the Top 20 without an ATP title after losing his first four finals.

But he cleared up that problem in just over two hours of struggle at the Putra Stadium as he defeated 2006 Australian Open finalist Baghdatis.

Wild card Baghdatis, once a member of the Top 10 but now ranked 60th, was unable to hold onto his early lead as Tipsarevic clawed back the momentum, winning with nine aces and five breaks of serve.

The Cypriot has fallen 40 ranking spots since January but is fighting back after his performance this week.

Tipsarevic, 27, leads their series 4-1, with their most recent meeting in Los Angeles last summer.
