After an easy opener, top seed Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan was put to the test in the second round of the Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship.
Jeevan was made to sweat by Ajai Selvaraj before overcoming his Tamil Nadu state-mate in three sets on Wednesday morning.
After the top seed pocketed the first set 6-2, Selvaraj came back strongly in the second to level the scores with a 6-3 win.
However, cramps and shoulder trouble dashed his hopes of causing an upset. Jeevan took the lead in the decider and emerged an easy 6-1 winner. He will next face Ashwin Vijayaraghawa for a place in the semifinals.
However, Wednesday saw two upsets in the men's draw. Young Arjun Kadhe booked his place in the quarterfinals, upsetting second seed VM Ranjeet.
After winning a set each, Ranjeet twisted his ankle in the beginning of the final set and was unable to continue the match. Thus, Kadhe set up a quarterfinal date with Mohit Mayur Jayaprakash.
Fourth seeded PC Vignesh was also shown the door by Saurabh Singh. Vignesh conceded the match when the score read 4-6, 1-1 due to health reasons.
In the women's section, the top three seeds easily secured their quarterfinal berths. While top seed Rishika Sunkara thrashed Devanshi Bhemjiyan 6-2, 6-3, Prerna Bhambri, the second seed, made short work of Tarranum Handa 6-2, 6-2. Third-seeded Natasha Palha beat Damini Sharma 6-2, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Vineeta Singh and Jhanvi Gupta made the girls' under-18 doubles final with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Mihika Yadav and Ramaya Natarajan.
