United face bitter rivals Leeds in League Cup

sports Updated: Aug 27, 2011 18:34 IST

Manchester United have been drawn to face old rivals Leeds United in the League Cup third round. Sir Alex Ferguson's side were pitted against Simon Grayson's Championship team in Saturday's draw and the tie offers the Premier League champions a chance to avenge their shock 1-0 FA Cup defeat against the Yorkshire club two years ago.

Championship club Brighton, who have made a fine start to the season after promotion from League One, will face seven-time League Cup winners Liverpool at the Amex Stadium.

League Cup holders Birmingham, entering the competition at this stage because of their involvement in the Europa League, begin the defence of the trophy they won against Arsenal with a trip to FA Cup winners Manchester City.

There are four all-Premier League ties with Chelsea at home to west London rivals Fulham, Aston Villa at home to Bolton, Stoke taking on Tottenham and Everton welcoming West Brom.

League Two club Shrewsbury's reward for their round two defeat of Premier League team Swansea is a glamour trip to play Arsenal, while Nottingham Forest will hope to upset Newcastle at the City Ground.
