Vasco Sports Club, Goa, defeated State Bank of Travancore by a solitary goal in a Group A match of the second division I-League here on Saturday.
Brazillian recruit Jefferson Rochas netted the all-important goal in the 73rd minute of the game following a spadework by his skipper Luciano Sabrosa.
SBT started confidently and were in charge of the game for the first 25 minutes, but their Nigerian strikers Dennis Afam and Abdul Naushad failed to give the finishing touches on a couple of occasions.
Just as the match was meandering towards a draw, Brazillian Sabrosa, who manned the Goan defence like a rock, set up his countrymate Roberto Bressa on the run. Bressa had a neat interplay with substitute Joy Ferrao, who passed the ball to an unmarked Jefferson to blast a powerful 16-yard grounder, giving no chance to SBT custodian Harshal Rahman.
Jefferson later left the field for treatment having injured his foot, but Vasco carried on to gain three full points.
