Italy are on the brink of Euro 2012 qualification, knowing that victory over Slovenia in Florence on Tuesday will ensure their place in Poland and Ukraine next year.
Friday's laboured and rather fortunate 1-0 victory in the Faroe Islands -- the hosts twice hit the woodwork -- left Italy with a record of six wins and a draw from their seven Group C games.
Following Slovenia's 2-1 defeat at home to Estonia and Serbia's victory over Northern Ireland, Italy only need another two points from three games to qualify for the finals.
They can ensure progress with a victory against a team they have already beaten 1-0 in Ljubljana earlier in the qualifying campaign.
PSG eye Abidal
Paris Saint-Germain have made an offer for Barcelona's France defender Eric Abidal, who is negotiating a contract renewal with the Spanish champions, a Spanish sports newspaper said on Monday.
“Eric Abidal has received a very interesting offer to join Paris Saint-Germain,” the Barcelona-based daily Sport said.
“The French club would give him a three-year contract, which could lead the French player to question his future at Barcelona.” Barcelona have offered Abidal a one-year renewal of his contract with a further year negotiable, but the player wants a fixed two-year deal.
Wenger loses appeal
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has lost his appeal against a two-match European ban, UEFA said on Monday.
Wenger was suspended for breaking the conditions of a previous ban he served during the Champions League playoff tie at home to Udinese. Arsenal have also been fined €10,000 for “improper conduct”.
