Exercise restraint, Amar advises his ilk

Amar Singh on Saturday said politicians should exercise restraint while taking names during election campaigns.

Maintaining that nobody could endorse the language used by Saharanpur Congress nominee Imran Masood, the RLD-Congress alliance candidate from Fatehpur Sikri said it was "reaction to action" of BJP’s PM pick Narendra Modi.

Modi, he said, crossed limits while making comments on defence minister AK Antony and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal recently.

"Senior leaders should set better examples and desist from comments below their dignity," he said while praising Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi who had dissociated himself from Salman Khurshid’s 'impotent' and Mani Shankar Aiyar's 'chai-wala' (tea seller) comments on Modi.

"Such grace in behaviour is inherited through 'sanskar' (tradition)," said Amar while interacting with the media during the inauguration of party office for Congress' Agra reserved constituency candidate Upendra Singh.

Hitting out at the UP government, the Rajya Sabha MP said SP government had no moral right to remain in power after the observation of the Supreme Court with regard to Muzaffarnagar riots.

Stating that the riots were aimed at weakening the Congress-RLD alliance in western UP, Amar said: "While SP leaders called riot victims 'dalal' (broker), Mulayam termed the riots as dispute between Jats and Muslims. This was to damage the traditional unity amongst communities for their political benefits," said Amar while targeting the party he was associated with for over two decades.

He also alleged the large scale misuse of official machinery in MLC election in Uttar Pradesh.

"To have fair free and fair election, it is necessary that director general of police (DGP) of the state should be removed," said the RLD leader while expressing apprehension of large scale misuse of power during Lok Sabha election in state.

Reacting to infighting within BJP, Amar took a jibe at Modi. "This is new Modi-written Ramayana where instead of Ram it is 'Dasrath' (LK Advani) who is being sent to 'vanvaas' (exile)," he said.

When asked about prospects of Smriti Irani contesting against Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, Amar said: "Smriti Irani is impressive and attractive leader and if she chooses to contest than many would come to see her but would not vote for her."

He claimed Hema Malini, contesting on BJP ticket from Mathura, too would meet the same fate. "Such leaders attract people but this attraction does not transform into voting," said the mentor of actress-turned politician Jaya Prada.
