A 22-year-old woman died at the Sadar Hospital in Jharkhand's Hazaribagh on Wednesday morning, 45 days after she was became yet another victim of acid attack.
Lalita Devi is the first acid attack victim to die after the Supreme Court, on July 18, directed state governments to pay Rs 3 lakh compensation to all acid attack victims, out of which Rs 1 lakh is to be paid within a period of 15 days of the incident being reported to the police.
The apex court had also a made photo ID card with residential address mandatory acid buyers and sellers while making illegal sale of acid a non-bailable offence.
Lalita Devi was attacked on June 17 by her brother-in-law Sunil Yadav and his accomplices while she was alone at her house in Bahimar village of Katkamsandi block, around 100 km north of Ranchi. She was left with 75% burns on her body except her face.
She was rushed to the Hazaribagh Sadar Hospital from where she was referred to the super speciality Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi.
She succumbed to the injuries five days after doctors at RIMS discharged her on Friday.
A doctor at RIMS told Hindustan Times that "she was released on July 26 in view of her recovery".
But according to her father, Shivlal, she was re-admitted to the Sadar Hospital, Hazaribagh, on July 29 where died on July 31.
"According to the hospital report my daughter died of cardiovascular failure. The acid had burnt down her chest," said the inconsolable father.
The accused Sunil Yadav -- of Mayurhand village of Chatra district in Jharkhand -- has been arrested.
Police quoted him as saying that he attacked Lalita because she had dumped his brother Pintu Yadav with whom she was married in a temple in 2011.
Sunil claimed that she had started an affair with another man. Soon after, her husband's body was found in a well under mysterious circumstances, Sunil told police.
Lalita had re-married Akhilesh Yadav of Mohanpur, Gaya in Bihar only this year. After her death, her husband took her body to Mohanpur where her last rites will be performed.
