Though there is no dearth of theme parks or recreational activities in Mumbai, a new initiative could be a welcome relief, especially in summer when temperatures soar. Snow World, at Phoenix Marketcity, Kurla, is billed as the city’s next big thing in indoor entertainment. According to its proprietors, the 18,000 sq ft space can accommodate 300 people.

Entry is fixed at Rs 400 per person, which includes boots, overcoats and gloves. You do, however, have to shell out Rs 20 for a pair of socks. There’s also a Rs 500 VIP entry that gives you gumboots and a fur coat. Cameras and cell phones are not allowed inside, unless you pay an additional Rs 50 and Rs 25 respectively.

Of course, one understands Mumbaikars’ curiosity to see snow, a novelty for many of us. And if that's all you’ve come for, the place doesn’t disappoint. The entrance is lined with mini ice boulders that lead you to a sledge complete with artificial reindeers. Up ahead is an empty log house, pine trees (plastic ones), and an igloo (not made of ice). A separate enclosure is used as an ice-skating rink where you are provided with bandy skates (boots with blades), with trainers available to help you learn. But the time limit of 40 minutes (which is how long you are allowed inside Snow World) is much too short to learn. At the far end of the park, there is a narrow slide, which is no match for what Water Kingdom or Esselworld offers. A separate enclosure meant for playing recorded music and dancing is not yet functional. A sled which is pulled by employees, a hoop for basketball practice (it broke after our ball hit it) and a snow-spraying machine are the added attractions.

However, when it comes to the promised “rides”, just a few sleds and a slide surely don’t qualify. If the park (modelled on a Snow World in Hyderabad) wants to get people to come back, they will need to add more activities. We reckon they could look at Dubai’s Ski Resort for tips.
