With the whole of India glued to their screens for Sachin Tendulkar’s last innings, the celebs are out on their support trips too.
When the Master Blaster walked out on the field on Thursday for his last official match, the Indian cricket team and his fans gave him a reception that will stay in his memories for long. While captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, on behalf of the team, presented Sachin with a cap that had ‘200th test match’ written on it, former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar came out to give him a pat on the back.
The next one came from actor Aamir Khan, who was present at Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium with filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker. Aamir, a diehard fan of the icon, said he decided to wear the same T-shirt that he wore for the semi-finals and finals of the 2011 Cricket World Cup, as it turned out lucky. He will continue to wear the tee for the entire duration of the match.
Mick Jagger’s Twitter tribute to Sachin:
Saluting you @Sachin_RT on your last Test match. Thanks for all the wonderful cricket you’ve shown us over the last 25 years, we’ll miss you.
Later, he came to the commentary box and said, “I met Sachin for the first time when I was shooting for the film Awwal Number (1990) in the Brabourne Stadium. The Indian cricket team of that time, led by Kapil Dev, was in practice session. I went there to meet Kapil Dev and Dilip Vengsarkar and saw a young cricketer practising with the team. I asked Kapil Dev as to who the lad was, to which he said ‘that is Sachin and he will be representing the country soon’. The first thing that got my attention about him was that he was middling every ball perfectly.”
