Missing Bollywood starlet Laila Khan, who featured opposite Rajesh Khanna in Wafaa, was allegedly murdered along with her five family members by step-father Pervez Tak. Here's an insight into her life:
Laila Khan went missing with five family members in February 2011. Her father Nadir Patel had filed a missing report about his family members at Oshiwara police station, Mumbai last February.
J&K police have said the starlet, missing for the last 11 months, was murdered along with her family members on the outskirts of Mumbai last year. Pervez Tak, who had married her mother Salima Begum, had allegedly confessed to the crime during interrogation. According to police, Tak (35) married Salima Patel, about 20 years elder to him, with the sole intention of usurping her property worth crores.
"Pervez said Laila, Salima, siblings Zara Patel and Imran Patel and cousin Reshma Patel were shot dead on the outskirts of Mumbai in February last year," police said.
Laila was allegedly married to Munir Khan, a member of the Bangladeshi terror outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami.
Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) suspected Laila Khan of having links with the Pakistani spy agency ISI and the terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Laila's SUV was allegedly used to ferry explosives for a bomb blast at the Delhi High Court in September 2011. She also allegedly supplied the LeT with information on the city of Mumbai.
Tryst with Bollywood
Laila Khan (born as Reshma Patel) was a Pakistan born actress, best known for her role opposite Rajesh Khanna in the 2008 Bollywood movie Wafaa. It was a comeback film for Rajesh Khanna, however, it bombed at the box office and received mostly negative reviews.
Sawant was shooting his second film Jinnat with Laila just before she disappeared from Mumbai. He had also then lodged a missing complaint.
Fame after death
Capitalising on the controversy, the makers of the film have now decided to re-release her film, Wafaa. "We are going to re-release the movie this year on television. The producers and distributors have already spoken to a TV channel regarding the satellite rights. This will give a chance to all curious viewers to see who Laila Khan was and how she acted," says director Rakesh Sawant, adding, "The re-release is also a gift to all fans of Kakaji (Rajesh Khanna) as he is in hospital and this was his last movie."
He says he's not encashing on the opportunity. "The film flopped as it released around Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Ghajini," he says.
