They put an end to their spat at Amitabh Bachchan’s birthday bash last year. But ever since, Sanjay Dutt and filmmaker Sanjay Gupta have hardly made any overt public expression of their friendship. However, Gupta has proven himself to be a true friend during Dutt’s time of crisis. He is standing steadily by Dutt post the Supreme Court decision sentencing Dutt to five years’ imprisonment.
After the SC judgment, Gupta skipped Kangana Ranaut’s birthday party, that saw several bigwigs of Bollywood in attendance. “He also skipped the launch of the song, ‘Laila’ from his own upcoming film (Shootout At Wadala). To put it simply, Gupta feels it’s not the right time to get into a celebratory mode,” says an insider close to the filmmaker.
Coincidentally, three days ago before the verdict, Dutt came over to Gupta’s place with loads of gifts for the latter’s kids. “They spent hours chatting and catching up with one another. There, they also decided that they will meet every Saturday night. They bonded like there was never any problem between them,” adds the insider.
When contacted, Gupta says, “I am in a state of shock. The verdict — with all due respect to the court — is really upsetting. We did meet at Amitji’s party, but last week, we really met and bonded well. I have been in constant touch with him after the verdict.”
The filmmaker, who met Dutt on Monday (March 25), hasn’t been to Dutt’s place to avoid, what he calls “a media tamasha”. “I have seen him suffer for 20 years now. It seems like a bad dream that refuses to come to an end,” says Gupta, who last week tweeted that he will be attending a private dinner at Dutt’s place.
