On May 4, when John Abraham headed to G7 Multiplex in Bandra (W) to observe the audience’s reactions to his recent release — Shootout At Wadala — he was least prepared for what was in store.

The actor arrived at the theatre 15 minutes before the 6.30pm show of his movie was to come to an end. The moment the lights were switched on, news about John’s presence at G7 spread like wildfire, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

“People saw him and went berserk. At one point, he got stuck as he was surrounded by the mob and no one would budge,” says a source.

The audience from an adjoining theatre in G7 that was screening Aashiqui 2 at the time also heard about the surprise appearance.

“They left the movie mid-way and joined in the chaos, which is why the crowd kept increasing,” adds the source.

Even though John had seven bodyguards with him, he was finding it hard to stay on his feet after a while, as he was being pushed and pulled by the frantic mob.

“John then had to be rescued. He was made to wait in the theatre’s basement office for an hour or so until the crowd dispersed,” reveals the insider.

Tanuj Garg, chief executive officer, Balaji Motion Pictures (co-producers), confirms the news, saying, “John’s presence unleashed mass hysteria at Gaiety (theatre at G7 Multiplex).”
