Ishwar Lal, a member of Pakistan's Sindh provincial assembly, was thrashed by fellow members after he sent a "love note" to a woman colleague, media reports from Karachi said Thursday.

Shazia Mari, who belongs to the Pakistan People's Party, received the note Wednesday through a peon when assembly proceedings were on.

According to the Dawn newspaper, as Mari read the note with visible distaste, she received another chit from Poonjomal Bheel, a minority member of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). Lal also belongs to the same party.

Incensed, she handed over both papers to Leader of Opposition Nisar Khuhro who, in turn, passed them on to other opposition members.

The opposition members moved menacingly to the treasury benches to which Lal belongs, caught him by the scruff of his neck and beat him up. He was dragged out of the assembly hall.

His apologies did not cut any ice, the Daily Times newspaper said.

On a complaint, the speaker suspended Lal and the members who had beaten him.

Talking to Geo Television later, Mari alleged that Lal was seeking to befriend her and had been sending her mobile phone messages for a year.

Lal issued a press statement later to explain that he had sent the note to inquire after Mari's health because he had been informed that she had been unwell lately.
