Karan Johar is upset with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for going public with his grouse over Sonam Kapoor’s light-hearted response to one of his questions during rapid fire round on his chat show, Koffee With Karan, months after the episode was aired.

"I’m told he doesn’t watch my show. If he had issues, he could have spoken to me privately instead of lashing out in print (published in a mainline daily). What he did was uncalled for, given that I’ve gone on record on every national and international platform to say that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is one of our finest filmmakers and a great visionary." On the show, Sonam was asked what she would do if she woke up as Sanjay one fine day. To which, she had laughingly quipped, "Get colour in my life — apart from Blueand Black."

KaranSanjay felt that Saawariya (2007), his ‘work of art’, was childishly reduced to a ‘blue film’ by Karan and said that his protégé will never look so beautiful again, because no director will work so hard on her. "Both Karan and Sonam need to learn to have more restraint, dignity and respect for fellow filmmakers," he had said. Responding to his comment, Karan says, "So many people have said so much about me. I’ve kept quiet because I’ve been brought up well. Sonam too has great lineage. We have great respect for Sanjay, but he seems to lack a sense of humour."

Various actors over the last three seasons of the show have been asked to rate directors, and even though the host has never topped that list, he’s not bothered. "I’m the first to say that after three blockbusters, Raj Kumar Hirani is the best director in the country," he says. Sanjay always considered Karan a friend, but he felt after Saawariya, something went wrong with his contemporary’s mind. But according to Karan, "Friends don’t behave the way he did. Now he’s no longer one. He’s only a competing filmmaker," he says, adding that despite all the controversies, due to more media reportage, Koffee With Karan was a success. "I’ll be back on TV next year for sure." We tried contacting Sanjay for his side of the story, but he remained unavailable.

Koffee with Karan controversies
Rishi Kapoor was upset with Karan when Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor took digs at son Ranbir. One wanted to gift him condoms, and the other rated him low on sex appeal. However, Rishi and Karan have worked amicably for Agneepath.

Priyanka Chopra responded to a Kareena Kapoor crack on her accent, by saying she got it from the same place that her boyfriend Saif Ali Khan got it from.

Koena Mitra called Saif Ali Khan a “Gareeb Nawab” when she heard that he’d answered Karan’s query on a celebrity who’d had a bad Botox job done saying, “Poor Koena, I can’t think of anyone else.”

Priety Zinta demanded an apology and got it from Tusshar Kapoor too, for insinuating that she’d had botox or cosmetic surgery done.
