Actor Sonam Kapoor, who is just back from the Cannes Film Festival, has stood up for Vidya Balan, whose wardrobe at the global event has been criticised severely. As a jury member, Vidya walked the red carpet more than a couple of times — wearing traditional outfits by designer friend Sabyasachi on each occasion.

“I was there and I know how people reacted. It was amazing. We need to look at her as someone who has done us proud. There, people are looking at the work she has done in India and as a wonderful and talented human being,” says Sonam, who unlike Vidya, got some great reviews from fashion critics.

Vidya experimented with an Umrao Jaan-esque look with a dupatta covering her head, and even channelled her inner Maharani Gayatri Devi at another appearance, with a red sari, pearls and structured handbag.

But Sonam defends Vidya, saying, “I was present at the ceremony. As soon as Vidya and the other jury members entered, they got a standing ovation. That is the kind of respect and recognition she got. She was next to Ang Lee and Steven Spielberg (Hollywood directors). But instead of concentrating on this tremendously beautiful and talented woman, people are looking at her clothes and trying to bring her down. That’s very sad.”
