Out of the blue, two years after his brother Zorawar separated from his wife, cricketer Yuvraj Singh has been named in a domestic violence case, filed by his estranged sister-in-law Akanksha Sharma, as of now known as a former Bigg Boss contestant.

Mother Shabnam Singh, also named as co-accused, along with Yuvi and Zorawar, is furious, especially as the rumours are spiralling out of control. When we call her, Shabnam Singh asks, “What has Yuvraj got to do with all this? The only relationship he has with Akanksha is that Zorawar happens to be his younger brother. This is such a torture when people call us saying, ‘Has Yuvraj been arrested?’”

The cricketer’s family lawyer, Damanbir Singh Sobti, will file a response in court on October 21. The Singhs were served with a notice on October 18, after Akanksha filed a petition in court, accusing Yuvraj, Zorawar, and Shabnam of domestic violence.

Sobti points out, “Akanksha has just filed a domestic violence petition. There’s no culpability fixed, there is no booking, no criminal FIR, and no inquiry. You can also file a petition against a dead person and put a Rs 10 stamp on it and get a notice issued by misstating [anything].”

In her petition, Akanksha’s lawyer has stated that since Yuvraj was a silent spectator to all the alleged “mental and financial violence” that her client faced in the Singh household, he is an equal party to it.

Reacting to this, Shabnam says, “This is so contradictory. In all her interviews and also on Bigg Boss, Akanksha has maintained that Yuvi has been always nice to her, like a brother and a guide. And now she has eaten her words for reasons known to one and all.”

The one admitted fact is that Akanksha moved out of her matrimonial home in September 2015; she is separated from Zorawar, but not yet divorced. Shabnam says it’s very strange how she has come up with these allegations only now. “We want to ask, what is she fighting for after two years? Clearly, Akanksha is not fighting for her marriage or [for] Zorawar here. What justice is she seeking [through] these baseless allegations?”

Saying how Akanksha is trying to play the victim card, Sobti reveals that the situation was actually the other way round. “Zorawar is the one who got sick and tired of Akanksha’s mental cruelty and drug abuse,” says the lawyer. “As an individual, regardless of whose brother and son he is, he’s first a husband, who wanted divorce from his wife. And so, without going to the media or leveling allegations, he quietly filed a divorce petition.”

A source close to the family further says, “Akanksha is only trying to extort money, because the [Singh] family is influential. Her screaming foul is so null and void; she’s doing this all for cheap publicity, using Yuvraj’s celebrity status.”
