Disney's variation on a trend started by the "Skylanders" games is "Disney Infinity," in which players can use real-world collectible toys and tokens to help build digital playgrounds for themselves and their friends.

The go-anywhere Toy Box mode was introduced in the "Toy Story 3" tie-in video game, and was of such unexpected invention and quality that it won comparisons to "Grand Theft Auto," were the thrilling crime series to be sanitized but rendered no less exciting in the process.

But a key part of Toy Box mode remains the ability to create environments derived from players' own imaginations, lay down new rules, and craft new games-within-the-game -- just as was the case with the "LittleBigPlanet" series on PlayStation 3 and Vita.
