'LittleBigPlanet 3' pushes creative possibilities

tech reviews Updated: Aug 14, 2014 17:24 IST

The varied creative pursuits of "LittleBigPlanet 3" are pushed to the fore in a bustling trailer for the imaginative mid-November release on PlayStation 4.

The franchise lead, the nimble stitched fabric Sackboy, is joined by three new characters in his quest to restore the world's creativity: puppy Oddsock, flying bird Swoop and the little/big size changer Toggle.

But the narrative arcs of "LittleBigPlanet" games, while rewarding in and of themselves, are carefully weighted to encourage players in the creation and sharing of their own levels.

Whether that means creating a course in the accepted side-on style of many "LittleBigPlanet" excursions, or reconstructing familiar architecture to accomodate something altogether more ambitious is up to the player in question; examples from the trailer include interstellar travel, skateboarding-themed slopes, top-down tank battles and cake-protecting fly swat challenges.

In terms of environmental backdrop, the trailer clues us in to the more domestic possibilities of "LBP 3," in comparison to the fantastical and fairy tale stylings of its PlayStation 3 predecessors.

The montage sees our four knitted heroes scramble and bounce over kitchen worktops, rooves and residential roadways in addition to the typically unusual interplanetary and make-believe settings -- so there's room for a little LBP craziness to visit more urbane mileux upon its PS4 launch the week of November 18.
