The 2012 Summer Olympics' official video game, London 2012, is to go on sale from June 26 in North America and June 29 in European regions, one month before the quadrennial Olympiad's real-world opening ceremony on July 27.

Track and field, cycling, swimming, archery, gymnastics and weight lifting are some of the athletic disciplines available, and there are motion-controlled events too: 110m hurdles, beach volleyball on the Xbox Kinect and pistol marksmanship on the PlayStation Move.

Nations can compete against each other as well, in the spirit of the Olympics, as medals won by each player contribute to their country's position on London 2012's global leaderboards.

It's the second Olympic video game from Sega that marks the London event, following Mario & Sonic's November 2011 outing on the Wii, which made the transition to portable 3DS format in February 2012.

Alternative, unofficial sports title Summer Stars 2012 makes its debut on Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 at the start of June, while web-surfers in search of both the athletic and ridiculous may find their needs met by Foddy.net's sprinting sims QWOP and 2QWOP, the pole-vault buffoonery of Poleriders, and Winner vs Loser's take on Konami's International Track & Field.
