It’s that time of the month again — no, don’t worry, I’m not going to do any “womanly oversharing” — I simply meant that time when I pick out a site I like and tell you why I like it. Sort of setting the standard, something we can all aspire to, yada yada yada. A nice way to spend your week, browsing through some good writing. (Only, don’t let your boss catch you!)
Now, here are some things you should know about me before I begin talking about this month’s site. For a very long time, I’ve hidden it from the world, and it’s only recently I’ve begun to embrace it. Ladies and gentlemen, I am a geek. About some things anyway. And I live with a geek about other things, and together, we consider an afternoon at Croma one of the funnest things we can do to while away time. The sight of a shiny new gadget that gleams and does pretty much everything under the sun even if there’s no need for it to do so, leaves me positively beaming.
Like the other day, I was leafing through Stuff, and I came across a set of speakers and a toaster that were transparent. Now, regular people might not find anything great about that, but you need to be a geek to really get how cool this is.Yeah, we’re nerdy like that.
Anyway, so usually most websites with a tech/pop culture type topic will usually suck me in. Which is where Den Of Geek (www.denofgeek.com) comes in. Now Den Of Geek doesn’t seem to quite know where it’s going. On the one hand it offers reviews—movies and television and games. On the other hand, it offers lists—top ten, top worst etc. Then there’s stuff about movie posters, news, random columns, and no ‘About’ page really, except for a list of contributors.
Unfamiliar, exciting place
But for all that, it reminds me a little bit of walking into a roadside market, the kind you’re not familiar with and strolling down the lanes and finding bits of wonderful things you wouldn’t expect. I find myself analysing the poster for the last Shrek movie, for instance. And discovering that a TV show I watch actually showed an episode meant for season one in season two. And looking at the best opening songs in films. Stuff like that. Stuff that wouldn’t fit anywhere else. Stuff that you’d only discuss with a fellow geek. Den Of Geek is meant to be just that.
