Sexy and stunning, the UX 50 V will easily pass off as a style statement. With its straight-line design, modest performance and large screen, this laptop will attract businesspersons and professionals. Its weight and size are more suited for a desk, but its performance isn’t of a desktop-replacement laptop. The laptop’s minimalist, slim design, glossy mirror-like bezel and touchpad and the matt chiclet keyboard offer a great mix of comfort and eye candy. Apart from a USB port and card reader on the left, there are no ports on the sides, which might prove slightly inconvenient ergonomically, though it enhances the curvy edges. The laptop weighs 2.62 kg, with a 15.6” screen, and is 385 mm in width, 32.8 mm in height and 257.8 mm in diameter.
The UX 50 V has 3 USB ports, a VGA and an Ethernet port, a multi-card reader, audio jacks, a webcam and an HDMI port. Despite a 15.6-inch screen, the battery life was over 3 hours and 5 minutes. Connectivity options include Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi N and Bluetooth. There’s a slot-loading DVD drive on the right and the package includes a USB mouse, a user manual and some power cables. Since all the ports are at the back of the laptop it could prove inconvenient when using external devices.
Mainstream applications will be a breeze and the discreet graphics suffice for light gaming and movies, but don’t expect to play games at higher resolutions. Watching movies is fun with the big screen and loud sound, but the shrillness at higher volume levels won’t impress audiophiles. The slot-loading DVD drive instead of a tray adds to the sleekness of the laptop.
Built on Intel’s CULV platform, the laptop features a GS 45 chipset and is powered by a single core low voltage processor, the Intel Mobile Core 2 Solo SU3500. Clocked at a modest 1.40 GHz, the processor features a decent 3 MB L2 cache, 4 GB RAM, a 320 GB hard drive and an Nvidia GeForce G 105 M graphics card.
If you want a stylish and elite laptop for office use, this is a good option. It costs Rs 66,000.
