Ever since HMD Global brought the Nokia brand back to the smartphone market, people have been waiting for a premium Nokia smartphone with top-of-the-line specifications. So far, the company has launched the Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 smartphones, which have been pretty much on par with the competition. Finally, Nokia on Thursday announced its flagship smartphone, the Nokia 8, which will take on a range of premium flagship smartphones such as the OnePlus 5, Honor 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S8.

The Nokia 8 is priced at €599 (46,000 approximately) and will go on sale in select markets from next month. There is no official word on the availability of the smartphone in India as yet.

The Nokia 8 doesn't look very different from the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 smartphones but comes with subtle improvements such as curvier corners and better built. Featuring an aluminium body, the smartphone measures 151.5mm x 73.7mm x 7.9mm. This makes the Nokia 8 slightly slimmer than the Samsung Galaxy S8, which measures 148.9 x 68.1 x 8.0mm. The Nokia 8 comes with IP54 certification, which makes it splash proof. The Samsung Galaxy S8, on the other hand, has a better IP68 dust and water-resistance rating. The Nokia 8 is available in Polished Blue, Tempered Blue, Steel, Polished Copper colour options.

One of the key highlights of the Nokia 8 is the Carl Zeiss cameras. It may be recalled Nokia and Carl Zeiss have been partners in the past as well. The first smartphone under the partnership between the two was the Nokia N90 in 2004. The Nokia N90 was rated as one of the best camera phones of its time. Later, the duo partnered for phones like the Nokia N95 and Nokia 808 PureView, which featured an overwhelming 41-megapixel sensor.

In the Android era, the Nokia-Carl Zeiss partnership brings a dual-camera setup featuring two 13-megapixel sensors. While the first sensor brings Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and colour, the second one brings Monochrome. The setup is quite similar to what we have seen on the smartphones like the Huawei P9. Other camera features include PDAF, f/2/0 aperture and dual-tone flash. For selfies, the Nokia 8 comes with a 13-megapixel front camera with f/2.0 aperture, PDAF, and display flash support. The camera can shoot videos in 4K resolution as well.

With the Nokia 8, the company has introduced a new feature called "bothie", which allows users to access the rear and front cameras at the same time. The smartphone also allows users to natively live stream videos from the device to Facebook and YouTube.

Another major highlight of the smartphone is spatial audio technology. Based on Nokia's critically acclaimed OZO audio technology, this feature allows the smartphone to channel sound in all directions as well as record high quality sound.

Nokia 8 Specifications

As said earlier, the Nokia 8 checks all the boxes for a top-end premium smartphone. It comes with a 5.3-inch IPS QHD display with 2560 x 1440, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and 2.5D glass. The smartphone runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat out-of-the-box. Just like in the past, Nokia has promised to deliver regular firmware and OS updates with the Nokia 8. Nokia claims it will be providing the updates on the same day Google rolls out them.

The smartphone is powered by Qualcomm's top-end Snapdragon 835 processor coupled with 4 GB LPPDDR4X of RAM. It comes with 64GB of storage and supports expandable storage up to 256GB via a microSD card.

Connectivity options include 4G, dual-SIM support (hybrid SIM slot), USB Type-C and NFC among others. The smartphone is powered by a 3090mAh battery.
