Valve has made it easier to design your own customised Steam Controller. The company has released CAD files, which is essentially a complete package comprising the controller’s mechanical CAD geometry, allowing you to customise and design the controller the way you want.
The Steam Controller is an input device that allows you to play games from all genres, including game-pad style games as well as those played with a mouse and keyboard. The controllers are wireless and completely configurable.
“We are releasing the mechanical CAD geometry for the steam controller and are eager to see the accessories and variations that come from your creativity. We are making available, under Creative Commons licensing, the geometry of all externally visible parts. This allows you to create and share to your heart’s content, but you’ll need to get in touch with Valve if you want to sell your creations,” said Valve’s Pierre-Loup A. Griffais on the Steam Controller’s Steam Community page.
These CAD files give you the exact mechanical geometry of each part of the Steam controller available under Creative Commons Licensing, which gives you all the freedom you would need to come up with your own creation.
In addition, Valve has also shared the first alternate designs on its website featuring two new battery doors which give you the option to store the controller’s USB receiver when not in use.

Allowing users to design their own Steam Controllers is a great initiative from Valve. It’ll be interesting to see the kind of outrageous controller designs users might come up with. And who knows, we might even see something that would give the more established manufacturers a run for their money.
