Last Updated: 15:52 IST(30/12/2011)
In 2012 major technology events such as CES, MWC, CeBIT, IFA and CITA Wireless will form the launch pad for exciting new trends and products. Expect to see improvements in mobile payment solutions; LTE and mobile broadband; enhanced search which utilizes artificial intelligence, voice and location to deliver more personalized results; and even more powerful tablets, super-smartphones and Ultrabooks.
45th International CES
Las Vegas Convention Center/Las Vegas Hilton
Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
The International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the world's largest consumer technology trade show. It is also one of the most closely followed events on the technology calendar -- alongside CeBIT and Computex Taipei -- as it welcomes numerous high-profile technology companies and is the launch-place for many groundbreaking new gadgets and high-tech products. 2,700 exhibitors will be at CES in 2012. CES is expected to attract around 140,000 visitors this year and is a "must-see" event for technology enthusiasts.
Macworld / iWorld
San Francisco, CA, USA
California-based Apple-centric conference and expo Macworld will be re-branded as Macworld | iWorld in 2012 to signify the gradual shift away from desktop Macintosh computers and towards i-devices and iOS applications. Founded in 1985, the Macworld Conference and Expo is the largest annual Apple Macintosh event in the world. In 2011 Macworld attracted close to 25,000 attendees, making it much larger than Apple's own annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), which is capped at around 5,000 places. Organizers also launched a successful Asian version of the conference in September 2011 which attracted an estimated 200,000 people.
GSMA Mobile World Congress
February 27-March 1
GSMA Mobile World Congress is a four-day event dedicated to cutting-edge mobile technology. It is accompanied by a string of high-profile mobile device announcements from leading manufacturers and as such is the most closely followed event in the mobile industry. A full program of conferences, keynotes and panel discussions runs alongside an exhibition of the hottest new products and concept designs from 1000 of the top companies and mobile operators in the field. 1,400 exhibitors and more than 60,000 industry members from 220 countries are expected in 2012.
March 6-10, 2012
Deutsche Messe AG
In 2011, 4,200 exhibitors from 70 countries and more than 339,000 visitors made their way to Hannover for CeBIT. In its heyday the expo managed to draw around 800,000 visitors but it has since shrunk in size. Nevertheless, with its 450,000-square-meter exhibition space CeBIT remains the world's largest digital IT and telecommunications event and eclipses the likes of COMPUTEX, CES and SITEX in exhibition size. “Managing Trust” is the keynote theme in 2012 and concrete solutions for digital and physical security will be on show in the fair’s CeBIT Security World. Related events include CeBIT Bilisim Eurasia (October) and CeBit Australia (22-24 May 2012).
26th SXSW / 19th SXSW Interactive
Austin, Texas, USA
The annual South by Southwest Music and Media Conference & Festival attracts an estimated 100,000 members of the international music, film, and interactive media industries in Austin, Texas, for a week-long convergence of ideas and talent. For five days during the festival, the "brightest minds in emerging technology" come to showcase digital works, innovative ideas and new products under the banner of SXSW Interactive. Like the newer European based LeWeb conference, SXSW Interactive focuses on emerging technology, social media and startups.
27th CTIA Wireless
Ernest N. Morial Convention Cente
New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
CTIA will host more than 1,000 exhibitors and over 40,000 spectators in 2012. The show covers wireless and converged communications, wireless broadband, mobile web computing and data industries, and in 2012 the focus is on "All things mobile." Companies will demo the latest in enterprise solutions, energy-saving products, and emerging mobile entertainment technology. While Mobile World Congress puts the emphasis on consumer devices, CTIA is all about the technologies that power them, including Location Based Services (LBS), Smart Energy, Wireless Health, Intelligent Transportation, Cloud Computing and Mobile Money.
32nd COMPUTEX Taipei
Taipei World Trade Center
With 106,450 square meters of exhibition space, Computex Taipei (also known as the Taipei International Information Technology Show) is the largest computer exhibition in Asia, second in the world only to CeBIT in Germany. Many large computing firms have research and development centers or production factories in Taiwan and will launch their new products at the event. A full spectrum of products are set for launch during the event including tablets, e-readers, smartphones, 3D technology and cloud services. More than 120,000 visitors attended Computex in 2011 to see products and services from over 1,800 exhibitors.
August 31-September 5
Messe Berlin GmbH exhibition center
Alongside CES, CeBIT and Computex, IFA is one of the world's biggest consumer electronics trade shows. IFA attracted 1,440 exhibitors and 238,000 visitors in 2011, generating 3.7 billion euros worth of orders. The event is a technology lover's paradise and also serves as a launchpad for many new innovative consumer appliances. Last year's notable IFA announcements included Sony’s Personal 3D Viewer (HMZ-T1); the LG PZ850T PenTouch 3D TV; the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7; Samsung Galaxy Note; Sony’s Tablet S and Tablet P; the Panasonic Lumix 3D twin-lens camera; and a range of new Ultrabooks.
The Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (more commonly referred to as CEATEC) is a cutting-edge IT and electronics trade show that features new technologies from participating electronics makers. The event is comparable but slightly smaller than the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in the US, attracting around 170,000 visitors and 600 exhibitors. It is a place for companies to reveal their latest products and services and to demonstrate them in use. Exhibitors showing finished products and services at the event are divided into two categories, one pertaining to the business sector, the other to individuals and general consumers. The accompanying CEATEC conference provides industry members with a forum to discuss information technology advancements and key developments within the IT & electronics sector.
32nd Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Autumn Edition)
October 13 - 16
HK Convention and Exhibition Centre
Heralded as the world's biggest electronics event, the Hong Kong Electronics Fair showcases electronic products and services from across the globe. In 2011 the event attracted 3,150 exhibitors and close to 61,000 visitors. ElectronicAsia 2012, a fair for electronic components, electronics production and display technologies, will run concurrently to the event. Visitors can also attend the Hong Kong Electronic Industry Summit, Green Electronics Forum, World of Display Technology, and World of Solar events that will also be held at the same time.
24th SITEX Singapore
SITEX is Singapore's longest-running IT event. Consumers have been visiting the expo since 1988 to purchase electronic goods at producer direct prices and to talk one-on-one with the companies developing the latest technological innovations. Organizers expect to attract 900,000 local and international visitors through the doors to talk with the more than 500 consumer electronic product manufacturers in 2012. GITEX Shopper & Consumer Electronics Expo, a similar but smaller manufacturer-to-consumer direct CE shopping event takes place annually in Dubai in October.
LeWeb is the biggest internet event in the European calendar, bringing together speakers, entrepreneurs, investors, the media, and technology buffs to discuss a "new web." The conference attracts approximately 3,000 participants from 60 countries. LeWeb is a relaxed event that shares a similar vibe and theme (emerging technology) to the much more established SXSW Interactive festival in the US. It mixes keynote presentations with new technology launches, panel sessions, networking events and a Start-Up competition.
