An FIR was registered against social networking website Facebook for not removing an online community page created by some persons who were using it to ‘glorify’ cow slaughter.

IPS officer Amitabh Thakur and his wife Nutan Thakur lodged the case in Gomti Nagar police station.

The complaint lodged under sections 153, 290 and 504 of the IPC and section 66 A of the Information Technology Act-2000 said that Facebook group ‘Aao Mil Kar Kaatein Gaay’ (let us come together to slaughter cows) glorified cow slaughter.

The page also had objectionable words against Hinduism and Islam. The comments were allegedly provocative in nature and prejudicial to social harmony, said the complaint.

“Facebook is criminally liable because it has not taken due precautions as warranted under section 79 of the IT Act despite repeated directions. We cannot use the kind of language being used on the page,” said Nutan. The complaint also said that Amitabh and Nutan had previously registered four other FIRs of similar nature no action had so far been taken in these cases.
