Firefox is rolling out a new beta introducing a new social API and a preview of the first social integration with Facebook Messenger. Firefox 17 is available for Windows, Mac OS, Linux and Android.

A Firefox sidebar brings Facebook chats and updates to the browser. The feature is
to be enabled via Facebook. Other social services like Twitter are to be plugged into Firefox. The idea is to let you manage your social media accounts without logging in.

Among the other significant new features, there is also the implementation of click-to-play, designed to prevent vulnerable versions of plugins to run automatically: the user has to click on the plug-ins to load them up.

The new beta also corrects a few bugs and features a slightly modified address bar.

Firefox 17 is available to download on the Mozilla website.
