The world’s largest video website, YouTube, has no plans to bring its subscription channels service to India any time soon, the company said.
As the Google-owned service made a long-anticipated move to include pay channels in 10 countries including United States last week, India does not feature among those countries. “We have no plans to bring the subscription service in India as the market is still evolving,” David Macdonald, head of YouTube content operations, Asia Pacific, told HT.
The company launched a programme that will offer paid channels on YouTube with subscription fees starting at $0.99 (about Rs. 54) per month. The move puts Google in direct competition with online services such as Netflix, which offer subscription services and attract viewers away from cable TV.
Otherwise, India is closely competing with US and UK in terms of total number of views for partner content on YouTube. “Globally, 72 video hours are uploaded per minute and India sees highest uploads nationwise in Asia and the 3rd highest in the world,” Macdonald said.
The company is optimistic about its product offerings in the Indian market and does not rule out launching the paid service model here in the future.
In India, YouTube gets 37 million unique users every month and the user base is doubling every year. “Things are looking great in Indian market... We are not denying the launch of this model sometime in future,” Macdonald said.
