It's still two months away but hype is building ahead of the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo, with Sony and Microsoft expected to provide specifics about their new consoles, and developers like Electronic Arts outlining plans for consoles, smartphones, tablets and the web.
annual Electronic Entertainment Expo is a platform for the games industry to appeal to trade members, journalists and fans who watch presentations live over the web, this year running June 11-13 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Electronic Arts follows Ubisoft in confirming stage times for 2013; both are to present their upcoming roster on June 10 at the annual Los Angeles event, with EA set for a 1pm PST start and Ubi expected later in the day.
There's not yet an official line on the content of that E3 presentation, but "Battlefield 4" is already on the horizon for later this year, and a fourth "Mass Effect" game is on the cards.
Also within the realm of big budget action games, Respawn Entertainment was founded in 2010 by Call of Duty's creators, duly partnered with EA, and has been keeping its work very tightly under wraps, with a late 2013 or early 2014 release thought possibile.
Meanwhile, EA racing specialist Criterion sprung a surprise in 2012 with the slick "Need for Speed: Most Wanted."
Creative Director Alex Ward revealed via Twitter that the studio is stepping away from racing games to work on a secret project -- recent form indicates that an E3 reveal shouldn't be ruled out, alongside typical updates to the NFL and FIFA sports franchises.
EA also has registered plenty of interest in games with broader appeal, having "Plants vs Zombies" studio PopCap and "Pet Society" studio Playfish as part of its stable, and E3 provides an opportunity to clarify its approach toward the changing mobile and social gaming sector.
It's also been a fair while since there was a new Sims game, with "The Sims 3" receiving eighteen add-ons since its 2009 debut. Main entries to the series have been four or five years apart, so the time would be right for another entry.
