Euro 2012 tweets visualized
Want to know who was cheering for which team on Twitter or which match scored the most tweets?
Twitter’s in-house data visualization scientist Nicolas Belmonte (@philogb) has created a visual summary of all the Euro 2012 action on Twitter.
The “Streamgraph” shows how many times Europe’s top 16 national teams were mentioned on Twitter -- from the group stages all the way through to the final between Spain and Italy.
“You can see how often all of the teams were mentioned throughout the tournament and look at how mentions compare for competitors for each match,” said Twitter employee Miguel Rios in a July 1 post on the company blog. “These different perspectives should give you a strong sense of how people reacted during the matches on Twitter. Look, for example, at the big spikes in Tweets that tend to occur during goals.”
Global traffic for the Euro 2012 peaked at 15,358 tweets per second (TPS) on Twitter as Spain scored its fourth goal against Italy in the Euro 2012 final. The Euro 2012 TPS record smashed the previously held record for a sports match. The previous record of 12,233 TPS was set by Twitter users during the 2012 Super Bowl in February.
