The audience’s contributions to their favourite TV shows usually begin and end with TRP ratings. But a new show, Kairi, seems to be involving its viewers more intimately.
Colors aired 25 promos over a period of five weeks, featuring the bitter-sweet ‘taanas’ (taunts) the mother-in-law on the show aims at her ‘bahu’ (daughter-in-law).
They received immediate feedback from soap opera lovers who had logged onto the channel’s website to post their feedback, including their own experiences with their in-laws.
Impressed with the ‘taanas’ posted by regular viewers online, the channel has now decided to incorporate some of the barbs in the show as well.
Prashant Bhatt, head of fiction, Colors says, “The ‘taanas’ are for the people, by the people and from the people. We came up with a few in our promos, but the ones the viewers sent were cooler. So, we decided to use them in the promos and on the show too. We are glad people contributed, as we were running out of bitchiness.”
After the buzz created by the promos, the channel had asked people to write in with their personal experiences. They received over 200 mails and over 80 phone calls during the course of five weeks.
Bhatt adds that a majority of the complaints were common and applicable worldwide. “On the show, Imarti Devi (the mother-in-law) is a sweet tyrant, who taunts her ‘bahu’ in a sarcastic manner. Now, we have a cool bank of ‘taanas’ which we will use over the course of 20-30 episodes.”She’s such a tease...
