The world number one women’s doubles team of India’s Sania Mirza and Switzerland’s Martina Hingis continued their dominating run by winning their sixth title of the year at the Guangzhou Open on Saturday.
The top seeds hammered the Chinese team of Shilin Xu and Xiaodi You -3 6-1 in the final to win their second WTA title in a row. Such was their domination that they did not drop a set en route to the title.
The win gave Mirza her seventh title of the season and sixth with Hingis. She won one trophy with Bethanie-Mattek Sands in Sydney, before her partnership with Hingis began in March
Mirza and Hingis have now won six of 13 events they have played since they teamed up in March this year, including the Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami, as well as the Family Circle Cup 500 event in Charleston, South Carolina. They also won two Grand Slam titles, at Wimbledon and the US Open, and now the Guangzhou Open. They have an incredible 42-7 win-loss record together.
After a first-round bye, they beat Anna-Lena Friedsam and Monica Niculescu 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals, and then Julia Glushko and Rebecca Peterson 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals.
The pair will next play in next week’s tournament in Wuhan, where again they are the top seeds.
