Somdev Devvarman crashed out in the first round of the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston, Texas on Wednesday. Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain beat India’s top-ranked singles player in straight sets 7-6 (5), 6-0.
Thirty-five-year-old Hidalgo is a former top-fifty player while Somdev is currently ranked 210. Somdev had earlier lost in the doubles event. Pair-ing up with American Michael Russell, the duo lost to Eric Butorac of the US and Israel’s Jonathan Erlich Israel 1-6, 6-7 (4).
Aisam wants to play in Bhupathi’s ITPL
Karachi: Pakistan’s top player Aisam-ul-Haq says he will compete in the International Tennis Premier League, which is to be launched by Indian star Mahesh Bhupathi by the end of this year. “I have been asked about my availability and I have told them I am interested in playing in the league,” said Aisam.
Jayaram, Bhat enter third round
Auckland: Ajay Jayaram and Arvind Bhat were the only bright spots on an otherwise disappointing day for Indian shuttlers at the New Zealand Badminton Open on Thursday.
While Jayaram beat Marius Myhre of Norway 24-22, 21-5, Bhat, seeded 13th, outplayed compatriot Kirtesh Dhindhwal 21-16, 21-12 to enter the third round of men’s singles.
Meanwhile, Parupalli Kashyap jumped a place to achieve his career-best world ranking of 7 in the latest list issued by the Badminton World Federation.
