Somdev in quarters of US Challenger event

Somdev Devvarman struggled past Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel in three sets to progress to the singles quarter-finals of the ATP Challenger tournament, Charlottesville.

The Indian recorded a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over his opponent in the second round of the $ 75,000 hard court tournament.

Somdev, a wild card entrant, next faces American eighth-seed Denis Kudla. He had lost six consecutive first round matches before coming into this event.

The Indian has slid to 733 in the singles ATP rankings.

Amritraj in final
Pune: Davis Cupper Saketh Myneni will meet Prakash Amrit-raj in the final of the $15,000 Solaris ITF Men’s Future Tennis Championships. In the semis, fourth-seeded Myneni upset top seed Christopher Rungkat (Indo-nesia) 6-2, 6-1. Amritraj beat Nicol-as Reissig (Austria) 6-3, 6-4.
