Prized real estate, art works worth millions and a posse of vehicles — affidavits filed by four Lok Sabha candidates in Delhi on Thursday threw up quite a few surprises.
Union minister Kapil Sibal, the Congress candidate from Chandni Chowk, leads the pack. The first candidate from his party to file his nomination, Sibal has seen his assets grow three times in three years. And real estate makes most of his assets. Sibal and his wife have more than Rs 4 lakh in cash and own jewellery worth more than Rs 1 crore.
In stark contrast is BJP's East Delhi candidate Maheish Girri. His affidavit says he doesn't have any property or vehicle. His assets are worth Rs 52.16 lakh that include Rs 25 lakh worth of paintings, sculptures and other artworks.
"I was a muttadheesh of a mutt for many years and I have never bought any property or vehicles. The paintings and other works of art I possess were gifted by different people," Girri told HT.
He hasn't disclosed the artists whose paintings he possesses. "Some of them are well-known painters," he said.
Two candidates of Aam Aadmi Party – Anand Kumar (North East Delhi) and Ashish Khetan (New Delhi) – also filed their nominations. While assets of former journalist Khetan, is worth more than Rs 1.71 crore, that of Anand Kumar is more than Rs 2.92 crore.
Khetan owns a flat in Noida and two cars — One Mahindra XUV and a Maruti Swift. Kumar owns a flat in Gurgaon and drives a Bolero.
