The 45-year-old has been associated with Sri Lankan cricket for a long time, having served as the head coach of the national men’s team in 2015. He has also recently worked with the men’s Under-19 team.
Allegations of corruption have plagued Sri Lankan cricket for years, including claims of match-fixing ahead of an international Test against England last year.
The island nation, who were world champions in 1996 and reached consecutive finals in 2007 and 2011, are ranked ninth among the 10 teams at this year’s tournament and have not won a bilateral series against a top-10 nation since 2015.
