The National Green Tribunal has asked the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority to provide details on the construction of a temple in Ulwe, Maharashtra, which environmentalists claim has violated coastal regulation zone rules. The tribunal has issued notices to the authority and the forest department, and the next hearing is scheduled for January 12.
The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority has written to the district collector and BMC commissioner over a complaint regarding alleged violation of Coastal Regulation Zone rules at Pherozeshah Mehta garden for the proposed reconstruction of Malabar Hill reservoir. The complaint alleges that the construction of the reservoir and other related works are in violation of CRZ rules. The MCZMA has asked the authorities to verify the complaint and take appropriate action if violations are found. The BMC has stated that they will review the details of the complaint before commenting.
As per the MCZMA minutes, CIDCO and Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) have submitted that of the 40,000 sq mtr plot for the temple, 2748.18 sq mtr fall under CRZ1A, 25,656.58 sq mtr in CRZ2 while 11,595 sq mtr is outside CRZ
An environmentalist has challenged the National Green Tribunal's (NGT) approval of an anti-erosion seawall on Versova Beach, Mumbai, which allegedly violates coastal regulation zone rules. The wall reportedly subsumes 48,000 sq m of beach area and contravenes statutory clearances. The NGT noted its decision would not adversely affect the project. Environmentalist Zoru Bhatena has filed a review petition alleging an "error apparent" in the NGT's recorded proceedings. The seawall has also been criticised for reducing public space, altering the beach's character and violating coastal ecology and tidal patterns.
