Akhilesh Yadav, the son of Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, is the youngest person to hold the post of chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. A three-time member of the Lok Sabha, Akhilesh Yadav became the chief minister in March 2012. Akhilesh Yadav, who has a Master’s degree in environmental engineering from the University of Sydney, received a lot of credit for his party’s strong performance in the state assembly polls in 2012, five years after it was decimated by Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party. However, his stint as chief minister has been marred by controversy and failure to effectively deal with issues such as the 2013 sectarian riots in Muzaffarnagar.
