One of the country’s most powerful politicians, J Jayalalithaa was sworn in as chief minister of Tamil Nadu in May 2015 following a nine-month break, after a court overturned her conviction in a corruption case. She was forced to resign as the CM in 2014 after being convicted of holding Rs 53 crore in unaccounted cash and property. A higher court later scrapped the case against the former film star.
