Lal Krishna Advani is a senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader who was former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s right-hand man and long regarded as the saffron party’s tallest leader during its time in opposition between 2004 and 2013. Advani, among the BJP’s key leaders who were at the forefront of the Babri demolition that led to years of Hindu-Muslim tensions in India, was eventually succeeded by Narendra Modi who rapidly rose in national politics to become the party’s prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 elections.
